Windows AI Assistant Copilot Open Beta: Win11 Dev Preview Build 23493 Released
Microsoft rolled out Build 23493 in its latest update for Windows 11 Dev Preview users, which packs a bunch of new features and improvements. The most notable of these is an early preview of the AI assistant Windows Copilot, which Microsoft first announced at its Build conference in May.
The design goal of Windows Copilot is to provide an integrated UI experience, and more features will be launched in future preview versions. To use Copilot, users need to upgrade to Windows 11 Dev Preview Build 23493 or later, and Microsoft Edge version 115.0.1901.150 or later. Users can launch Windows Copilot by simply clicking a new button (or WIN+C) on the taskbar. Windows Copilot will log in with a Microsoft account or an Azure Active Directory account.
Windows Copilot will be docked on the right side in the form of a sidebar, will not overlap with desktop content, and will run independently next to open application windows, and users can interact with Windows Copilot at any time.
In the first preview, users can ask Windows Copilot a series of questions or take the following actions:
- "Switch to dark mode."
- "Turn on Do Not Disturb."
- "Summary for this website." (Activity tab in Microsoft Edge)
- "Write a story about a dog who lived on the moon."
- "Take me a picture of a serene koi pond and lily pad."
Additionally, Windows Copilot and Bing Chat generate context-sensitive responses and improve the user experience in Windows.
The update also introduces a new Settings home page that provides an overview of the device, quick access to key settings, and helps users manage their Microsoft accounts. In Settings, Microsoft has created interactive cards that represent various device and account-related settings, grouped by commonly used functions. Each card is optimized to provide users with the most relevant information and controls.
