Code-named G3PO, it is reported that OpenAI is developing an open source AI model: against the Meta Llama 2 model
According to the foreign technology media The Information, OpenAI is currently developing a new open source model code-named "G3PO" in order to counter Llama 2, an open source model jointly developed by Microsoft and Meta, and it is unclear when it will be released.
The Llama 2 model has a total of 70 billion parameters. It is not only open source but also supports commercial licenses, allowing any individual or business to use the model to make money.
OpenAI currently adopts a closed-source model , so it felt the pressure brought by the Llama 2 model, so it planned to release an open-source model two months ago, and the report said that the internal code name was "G3PO".
Netizens in the Reddit community believe that OpenAI delayed the release of the open source model for two reasons:
- The OpenAI team is relatively small and focused on promoting the app store, providing customers with a marketplace to sell custom AI models. This helps OpenAI build a moat.
- OpenAI also wants to create a personalized ChatGPT assistant. Launching a true "spin-off" to compete directly with Microsoft is an effort "likely to take years," the source said.
