Spotify launches podcast voice translation feature, entirely using the podcaster’s voice!
Spotify launches Voice Translation for Podcasts, a breakthrough AI-powered feature that translates podcasts into other languages—all using the podcaster’s voice. This feature is based on OpenAI's newly released speech generation technology .
Regardless of culture, country or community, the stories we share connect us. More often than not, it’s the speaker’s voice that gives these stories as much value as the narrative itself. For 15 years, Spotify's global platform has empowered creators of all backgrounds to share their work with audiences around the world.
At its core, this is achieved through technology that harnesses the power of audio to overcome barriers to access, boundaries and distance. But with recent technological advances, we're starting to wonder: Are there more ways we can bridge language differences and make these voices heard globally? Today, we’re excited to launch Speech Translation for Podcasts , a breakthrough AI-powered feature that translates podcasts into other languages—all using the podcaster’s voice.
The tool, developed by Spotify, leverages the latest innovations - one of which is OpenAI's newly released speech generation technology - to match the style of the original speaker, giving listeners a more realistic and sound-like experience than traditional voiceovers. Friendly and natural. A podcast originally recorded in English can now be made available in other languages while maintaining the unique voice characteristics of the speaker.
As part of the trial, we're working closely with podcasters Dax Shepard, Monica Padman, Lex Fridman, Bill Simmons, and Steven Bartlett to generate AI-driven content for some in-catalogue shows and future show releases in other languages, including Spanish, French and German) phonetic translation. We’re also looking forward to adding other shows like Dax Shepard’s eff won with DRS, The Ringer’s The Rewatchables, and a new original podcast from Trevor Noah launching later this year.
“By matching creators’ own voices, Speech Translation gives listeners around the world a more authentic way to discover and be inspired by new podcasters than ever before,” said Ziad Sultan, vice president of personalization. "We believe a thoughtful approach to AI can help create deeper connections between listeners and creators, which is a key component of Spotify's mission to unlock human creative potential."
The pilot creator's voice translation show will be available globally for Premium and Free users. We are launching a batch of translated shows in Spanish first, with French and German to follow in the coming days and weeks: Lex Fridman Podcast – “Interview with Yuval Noah Harari” Armchair Expert – “Kristen Bell, By the Grace of God , Returns” The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett – “An Interview with Dr. Mindy Pelz” Starting today, these translations will be gradually rolled out to users in the Now Playing view of supported shows.
Can't wait and want to hear it now? Head over to our dedicated Speech Translation Center, where we'll be updating more Speech Translation programs over the coming weeks and months. Today is just the beginning. We're excited to empower creators to tell their stories to a larger global audience. Feedback from creators and listeners of the experiment will provide important insights for future expansion, iteration, and innovation.
As the number of people regularly listening to podcasts on Spotify (100M+) continues to grow, we'll continue to explore new ways to overcome storytelling barriers.
